Outsourcing our Sports Athletes

Our parents biggest concern was whether their chosen career was vulnerable to outsourcing. Young adult sports fans may have to deal with talent going abroad for more lucrative job offers. Seriously though, the concept of outsourcing may finally strike a chord with Americans when their top talents no longer play for American sports teams.

Should we really be concerned? Not really. The only sport any foreign markets may have a shot at hurting would be basketball. The United States has a monopoly on baseball and football but that doesn’t account for the popularity of basketball. The NFL season only consists of 16 games that is heavily dominated by a male audience. Baseball on the other hand seems to go on forever and its audience is a more loyal niche group. Basketball on the other hand is a fast paced game that is easy to comprehend and its end goal is simple. This is a winning combination for old and new fans alike.

LeBron James may entertain a career overseas if he is compensated- $50 million is sounding so right and a Greek team is serious about the proposition. With the dollar at all time lows and the euro gaining strength everyday, the day that a top sports athletes commits to a foreign sports team may be just around the corner. Perhaps this will be the wake up call Americans will need to anger them about outsourcing. After their anger is over then they can seek a proactive approach to dealing with outsourcing so they are not stuck with mediocre players in the NBA. Then they can figure out how to fix the other markets that outsourcing has damaged.

Is that what it is going to take for Americans to finally fix the leaks in the job market and economy. Will this have to be our wake up call for our generation of young adults? Will we finally take a stand only when Hollywood is outsourced to Bollywood and foreign nationals control our entertainment industry? Will it take MySpace and YouTube shutting down for copycats that are funded by a more stable monetary system before we are outraged by our failed domestic/foreign policy? At least we can sleep comfortably at night knowing that LeBron will play in the NBA until 2010.
