SPLIT: A Divided America Film

SPLIT: A Divided America is a documentary film that entertains and attempts to make sense of contemporary American politics and the partisan atmosphere that seems to dominate the environment.

In 78 minutes you travel across the United States from the West coast to the East as American civilians and political junkies speculate and offer their analyzaions of our current political climate.

As a partisan blogger . . . what you can’t tell I am progressive? . . . I found a non-partisan approach to explain a partisan issue intriguing. Kelly Nyks remains true to his cause as he delivers balanced dialogue and constructive viewpoints throughout the film.

Are we really divided though? Is our current approach to partisan politics new? Although I agree with Nyks underlying message that our current state of partisanship is detrimental to American Democracy, one must remind themselves that it has always been like this and Nyks touches upon this.

As a political junkie, I can attest that we have always been a partisan nation when it comes to political and social issues in America. Perhaps, with the advent of multiple distribution mediums that relays this message on a 24/7 basis, it has caused us to feel that America is divided more than ever. Americans tend to romanticize the past.

Were we not divided when a minority persuaded the majority that rebelling against Mother England was our only option? The Civil War was not a culture war, right? We were not divided then either or were we? The 1960s could not have been as controversial as folks make it seem or was it?

The United States has always had a history of division but at the end of the day we compromise and reach amicable resolutions. There are times in American history that partisan politics is not as stark and divisive as other times. Like a pendulum it swings back and forth.

Nonetheless, this should not take away from the overall message that Nyks attempts to address. In a timely fashion, SPLIT debuts before a Presidential Election where the message seems to resonate as Obama and McCain fight for the Executive Branch.

SPLIT offers intelligent insight from political commentators such as Tucker Carlson, Noam Chomsky, Jesse Jackson, and Robert Putnam. You may purchase Split: A Divided America as a digital download ($2.99/$7.99) or the old fashion way as a DVD ($14.99) online. I have embedded the official trailer for the film.
